The opening scenes in Covered With Snow take place on the Columbia Icefield, which straddles the border between Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Here’s a one-minute video that depicts the importance of its pinnacle, Snow Dome, to watersheds across North America. (I love how the narrator calls Snow Dome a “natural water tower”.) Someone shot this drone footage from the far lower reaches of the Athabasca Glacier where Otis and Ulrich begin their journey. The head-wall below the main Icefield comes into view only in the distance, around the 1:00 mark. This artsy video gives a good sense of the Banff-Jasper Highway leading north to the Icefield and also shows the scale of some of the big, scary deep crevasses on and around it (starting ~1:23). (It also highlights the visual problem of figuring out how big things are in the absence of ordinary reference points.) The picture accompanying this post is my own, from when I was up there... with a former acquaintance... a long time ago.
